Overview

Sports administrators manage clubs, academies, associations or organisations that are involved in sporting or recreational activities. They promote sporting or recreational activities, seek corporate sponsorship and establish rules and policies of the organisation. They are also responsible for hiring staff including coaches and umpires.

Work is at a sporting club or facility, and some travel may be required.

Suits people with strong leadership skills who are excellent at communicating with people of all backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities

  • plan and manage sporting events
  • create and implement marketing and promotional strategies
  • recruit, train and manage staff
  • ensure all sporting standards and regulatory codes are in order
  • set up a record system to monitor the progress of new initiatives and activities
  • maintain and improve the club or organisation’s sporting facilities
  • ensure business needs for players and the organisation are met.

Education, Training and Skills Pathways

  • Formal qualifications and relevant experience are highly regarded. University and Vocational Education and Training (VET) are both common study pathways.  
  • Qualifications include: Bachelor of Sports Management, Bachelor of Sport Business, Certificate II or III in Sport & Recreation, Certificate III in Community Recreation

You may also require:

  • Membership with the Sport Management Association of Australia & New Zealand may be useful
