Skilling Queenslanders for Work

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is a Queensland Government initiative that provides a suite of targeted skills and training programs supporting Queenslanders to gain the skills, qualifications and experience to enter and stay in the workforce.

Work Skills Traineeships

The Work Skills Traineeships program provides paid employment opportunities to disadvantaged Queenslanders while at the same time delivering projects which leave a visible and long lasting impact on social infrastructure and services in a local community.

For example, projects can: create, repair and upgrade public spaces and facilities or undertake revegetation, regeneration and river or foreshore restorations.

Success Stories

Since 2015, Active Queenslanders Industry Alliance has implemented several Work Skills Traineeship projects located in the Sunshine Coast, Ipswich, Rockhampton, Scenic Rim and Brisbane North regions. Projects usually involved groups of 15 trainees undertaking paid work and formal training through a Certificate I in Construction or Certificate I in Conservation and Land Management traineeship. Throughout the projects, trainees worked on refurbishing sport and recreation club facilities as well as Local Council facilities, parks and recreation spaces including upgrading bush walking tracks and mountain biking trails.

Work undertaken by the trainees included painting, fencing, constructing storage, seating and pergolas, upgrading bathroom or kitchen amenities, installing walking track edging, paving, weed removal and lawn maintenance. These projects are funded by the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

Success Stories

AQIA delivered a construction project at the Queensland Moto Park located in Coulson (near Boonah). Seven trainees worked hard upgrading the facilities at the Moto Park including the following tasks: painting, building fencing around the café, installing new walls and roof to the mechanic’s workshop, concreting posts and minor carpentry including installing the café’s cold room and putting in palings under the Moto Park’s house to keep out the kangaroos. Two trainees found full-time employment during the training– one of them commencing a carpentry apprenticeship which was a fantastic outcome!
